A list of things I'll miss in the USA.

One of the biggest things when moving overseas is the inevitable culture shock. Even after a few times doing it you are never fully prepared; there's always something you'll miss, and more importantly, you'll have forgotten that you'll miss it. That's what usually hits hardest. Nevertheless it still helps to minimise the effect by making a list of stuff beforehand, just to steel yourself against the inevitable.

Here's mine. It's largely food related, which may be manageable (it turns out you can get Indomie brand Mi Goreng from Amazon, so that didn't make the list… best student food ever). Obvious members of the list (friends, family and fellow artists) are omitted, because hey, they're obvious. If you have the chance to do/eat/get/hear some of the things on the list, do so.
The List (likely incomplete, and in no particular order):

  • Combination Laksa at the Asian Noodle House on Northbourne
  • Bundaberg Ginger Beer
  • My copies of "The Silver Spoon" and "The Cook's Companion"
  • SBS and NITV (in particular PopAsia and the Marngrook Footy Show)
  • ABC iView (for Good Game, Mad as Hell, and reruns of British comedy shows)
  • Espressos from Café on the Boulevard and Espresso Room
  • Cheap art supplies at Top Bargain
  • Bacon and Egg pies from Dobinson's
  • Wiener Teller at the Austrian Club (with an obligatory bottle of low-grade Grüner Veltliner)
  • Rendang at Indo Café (always ask for sambal!)
  • Bulgogi Set at Cocorea
  • Bento at Coo Izakaya
  • The Wig and Pen
  • The Metropolitan Opera Live in HD at the Dendy (with obligatory popcorn and beer)
  • ABC Classic FM (and the Classic 100)
  • Eurovision parties (this may need to be exported to the USA)
  • Thursday morning singing lessons with David Reedy
  • Prince Nikolai, David's cat. Harshest vocal critic ever. He'll start mewling like mad if your technique is even slightly off!
  • The acoustic and aesthetic of All Saints in Ainslie
  • The Canberra Poetry Slam scene
  • Crumpets with honey
  • Hikeruns in the bushland
  • Sunsets over the Brindabella Ranges
  • The view from Mt Tennent
  • Howard Arkley's portrait of Nick Cave at the NPG (https://www.portrait.gov.au/site/exhibition_subsite_making_portraits2.php)
  • Imants Tillers' "Terra Incognita" at the NGA (http://artsearch.nga.gov.au/Detail-LRG.cfm?IRN=149217)
  • Chuck Close's "Bob" at the NGA (http://artsearch.nga.gov.au/Detail-LRG.cfm?IRN=37305)
  • The members' lounge at the NGA (a well hidden secret)
  • Chole Bhature at Bharat International

There's probably a longer list of stuff that won't be missed (Canbrrr! APS Culture! Mooseheads!). Sometimes they're the worst ones, as you think you won't miss them, then at some point whilst you're away you decide you do miss them, but then when you get back and experience them you remember why you hated them.

Anything else worth adding to the list?
